Gimnasia L.P. twice led Banfield but conceded a 90th-minute equaliser in a 2-2 draw, despite producing more shots, possession and expected goals.

Auzmendi and Silva Torrejon put Gimnasia ahead

Gimnasia L.P. drew 2-2 with Banfield in the Liga Profesional Argentina Clausura at Estadio Juan Carmelo Zerillo. The result was level at half-time, with Gimnasia twice taking the lead before Banfield secured a point through a 90th-minute equaliser.

Gimnasia opened the scoring after 20 minutes. N. Schelotto assisted A. Auzmendi, who finished to give the home side an early advantage. Their lead could have grown at 36 minutes, but L. Janson missed a penalty. Banfield punished that setback two minutes later when L. Gomez converted from an A. Balboa assist to make it 1-1.

Late equaliser denies Gimnasia

The home side restored its advantage in the 62nd minute. Auzmendi turned provider for P. Silva Torrejon, whose goal made it 2-1. Banfield made three changes at half-time and continued to search for a response, while Gimnasia introduced A. Steimbach and A. Colazo in the 61st minute before M. Panaro replaced Janson six minutes later.

Banfield found the decisive moment in stoppage time. R. Malanca assisted D. Zalazar for the 90th-minute goal, completing the scoring and changing what had looked like a home victory into a draw. The visitors also made a further second-half substitution when S. Lopez replaced M. Lopez.

Gimnasia created more but could not hold on

The statistics show a clear advantage for Gimnasia in attacking output. The hosts had 23 total shots to Banfield’s 10, including 15 attempts from inside the box compared with five. They also led shots on target 7-5, corners 5-2 and possession 56%-44%. Their expected-goals figure was 3.52, against 0.44 for Banfield, but the scoreline remained level because Banfield scored with its late opportunity.

Gimnasia also circulated the ball more effectively, completing 346 passes at a 79% accuracy rate, compared with Banfield’s 264 accurate passes at 75%. Banfield committed 16 fouls to Gimnasia’s nine and collected both of the match’s yellow cards: L. Gomez was booked in the 65th minute and F. Alvarez in the 82nd.
