Esteban Fernández’s 90th-minute goal earns Gimnasia M. a 2-2 draw

Gimnasia M. drew 2-2 with Boca Juniors at Victor Legrotaglie in Mendoza on Saturday, September 5, 2026, in Round 8 of the Liga Profesional Argentina Clausura. Boca led 2-1 at half-time, but Esteban Fernández’s 90th-minute goal earned Gimnasia a share of the points.

Boca make early lead count

Boca opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Alan Velasco finished a move assisted by Tomás Belmonte. Gimnasia responded almost immediately, with I. Charparin equalising two minutes later after a pass from Fermin Antonini. The quick exchange set the tone for an open first half.

Boca regained the lead in the 38th minute. Kevin Zenon made it 2-1 with Dylan Gorosito providing the assist, giving the visitors the advantage at the interval. Zenon also had a strong individual contribution before leaving the match in the 78th minute, recording two shots on target and two key passes.

Late equaliser changes the outcome

Gimnasia continued to press after the break and eventually found the decisive moment in stoppage time. Esteban Fernández scored in the 90th minute to complete the 2-2 comeback. Fernández played the full match and finished with a goal, one shot on target, one key pass and two tackles.

The game featured six yellow cards and no red cards. Boca’s Kevin Zenon was booked in the sixth minute, while Luciano César Cingolani received Gimnasia’s only yellow card in the 37th. Jorge Nicolás Figal, Carlos Palacios and Lautaro Blanco were also cautioned for Boca, while Darío Javier Franco Gatti was booked for the hosts.

Gimnasia lead the numbers, but not the scoreline

The statistics showed Gimnasia enjoying more of the ball and producing the greater attacking volume. The hosts had 59% possession, completed 365 accurate passes to Boca’s 236 and attempted 17 shots compared with 12. Gimnasia also led shots on target 7-6 and had 11 shots inside the box to Boca’s nine.

That territorial advantage did not translate into a half-time lead, as Boca’s two goals came from a more efficient first-half display. Both goalkeepers were tested, with Gimnasia’s goalkeeper making four saves and Boca’s making five. Gimnasia’s I. Sabatini was the standout performer by rating, earning an 8.0 after 90 minutes and registering two shots on target.

A point apiece in Group A

The draw gives both sides one point from the Clausura fixture. In the supplied Clausura Group A standings, Gimnasia M. are second with 15 points from seven matches, while Boca Juniors are eighth with 10 points from seven. The result leaves Gimnasia unbeaten in this match while Boca avoid defeat after conceding at the end.
